Sagewell and DTE Energy launch

Bring Your Own Charger® (BYOC) program!

DTE Energy pilot program is in partnership with analytics company Sagewell and incentivizes vehicle charging during off-peak hours without the need to install a second meter

DETROIT, July 6, 2020 – DTE Energy today announced the launch of the Bring Your Own Charger®, a pilot program to benefit participating customers who drive electric vehicles (EVs). The program incentivizes enrolled EV owners to charge their vehicles during off-peak hours, with no special hardware or separate meter required.

Bring Your Own Charger participants will program their vehicles to charge during off-peak hours, and software algorithms developed by analytics company Sagewell will confirm compliance from meter data. Enrolled customers will receive a monthly credit of $8 a month paid out in quarterly installments.

Off-peak EV charging helps smooth energy demand and utilizes excess capacity in the electric system, which benefits all DTE customers. Communities who have tested the program have seen participants move 95% of their charging to off-peak hours, efficiently integrating EV load with the distribution system and leading to customer affordability.

“DTE is always exploring innovative ways to not only keep electric costs affordable for customers, but also benefit Michigan’s environment by encouraging cleaner transportation,” said Robert Feldmann, executive director of DTE Electric Sales and Marketing. “Bring Your Own Charger makes it easy for EV drivers to enjoy the savings of off-peak charging without having to invest in or install extra equipment. It’s a win for those drivers, and it supports the efficient use of the electric system, which translates to a win for all our customers.”

“Partnering with DTE on Bring Your Own Charger® program is one of several data-driven initiatives on which we’ve partnered with DTE over the past 10 years,” said Pasi Miettinen, CEO of Sagewell. “DTE has been a leader in using new technologies to create value for its customers, and we have been pleased to contribute to those initiatives with our SageSightSM software.”

The pilot will enroll up to 1,000 EV drivers who use a level 2 charger at home and are not already enrolled in a time-of-use rate. Interested EV drivers can enroll by visiting:
